Abstract: In this paper, the ambient stress characteristics of seismogenic gap from several earthquake examples by using digital earthquake data are studied and its mechanism is discussed. It is indicated that the ambient stress approaching an earthquake is higher than that of usually small earthquakes (not near the focal zone of main earthquake) which form seismogenic gap at same period, and that the ambient stress of the small earthquakes near the focal zone of main earthquake is higher. The mechanism described above can be explained by the hard inclusion model. The conclusion of this research can be of great significance to improve forecast efficiency of seismogenic gap and increase the cognition of mechanic mechanism in the process of earthquake preparation.
