Abstract: In this paper, the method for analyzing the tectonic deformation of active rupture zone was discussed using GPS and cross fault survey data. This method can quantitatively calculate the slip rate and strain rate in each unit of both sides of the fault. Meanwhile, the effects of GPS station distribution, fault constraints and temporal scale normalization on the calculated results were comparatively studied. By using the velocity data of local GPS network and cross fault survey data during 1999—2001, 2001—2004 and 2004—2007, the slip rate and strain rate in the Xinshuihe fault zone were calculated. The results show that high strain rate was appeared and the strain axis turned in 1999—2001, 2004—2007 in the southern Xianshuihe fault.
