Abstract: The eastern Kunlun fault zone is an important fracture in the northeast of Qinghai Tibet plateau, and it has obvious segment activity. Strong earthquakes have occured several times by the westward migration and formed more than 1000 km long surface rupture zone. According to history seismic survey, ancient earthquake and recurrence intervals and sliding rate studies in different segments, it is found that the eastern Kunlun fault zone has two seismic gaps, the Maqu segment is the most dangerous one, and the maximum potential moment magnitude is not less than 7.5.

Key words: The eastern Kunlun fault zone, Seismic gap, The Maqu segment
