Abstract: Collecting intensity isoseismal data of 488 earthquakes in western China since 1900, using long and short axis ellipse models, applying Levenberg-Marquardt method and least square method to fit the attenuation relationship of seismic intensity in Southwest China and Northwest China. The results shows that the regression model results of the two fitting methods are in good agreement, and the seismic intensity attenuation relationship in the two statistical units in the southwest and northwest regions is significantly different, and should be treated as different regions. At the same time, the results of this paper are compared with the results of seismic intensity attenuation in western China obtained by other researchers. Based on the intensity circle data of 6 real earthquakes in western China in recent years, the model in this paper is compared with other calculation results of the long and short axis and area of the regional model show that the accuracy of the calculation result of the intensity attenuation relationship in this paper is slightly greater than that of the large area, but compared to the small area, the result of this paper is more attenuated than the intensity of the small area. The error of the relationship result is too large. Since the earthquake intensity attenuation relationship has regional characteristics, the finer the area is, the smaller the scope will be, and the higher the accuracy will be. However, calculating the intensity attenuation relationship in a large area is helpful to grasp the distribution of the disaster in a large area in the first time, especially for the magnitude of the earthquake. For larger earthquakes, the seismic intensity attenuation relationship on a large scale can quickly know the intensity distribution characteristics of the affected areas of neighboring provinces. There is no need to re-calculate the seismic intensity attenuation relationship data of another province. The results obtained by the method better reflect the regional characteristics of intensity attenuation, and are suitable for engineering seismic research and application in western China.
