Abstract: Analysis on the correlation of the seismic sequences of shallow earthquakes and tidal stress in China′s mainland since 1960 shows that some seismic sequences including seismic sequences of foreshocks, foreshocks-main shocks, foreshocks-main shocks-aftershocks and main shocks-aftershocks, such as the seismic sequences of foreshocks-main shocks of the Longling earthquake, the seismic sequences of foreshocks-main shocks-aftershocks of the Xingtai earthquake and the seismic sequences of main shocks-aftershocks of the Tangshan earthquake etc., were obviously triggered by tidal stress. The triggering of these earthquakes by tidal stress was quite obvious in characteristics and is of important implication in earthquake prediction. A preliminary discussion on the mechanism of the triggering mechanism could be related with the geological structures of earthquake preparation system, the property of rocks in the focal areas, the orientations of the stress field and the directions of the earthquake ruptures.
