Abstract: Internet is developing quickly towards Grid nowadays after having developed to Web for dozens of years, and the visible trend is developing from WWW (World Wide Web) to GGG (Great Global Grid). Since the first Grid framework, PACI (Partnerships for Advanced Computational Infrastructure) was established in the United States By NSF in 1998, there appeared many papers, monographs and Web sites to introduce Grid, which promoted greatly the Grid's applications and development all over the world. Based on these large numbers of resource about Grid, this paper primarily summarized 4 general characteristics of Grid and analyzed objectively the background for generating the Grid technology. Finally, through research the authors believe that Grid will bring more influences on Earth Science than other science at the beginning of 21st.

Key words: Grid, Internet, Earth Science, Data sharing, GGG
