Abstract: The propagation, interaction and coalescence of multi-cracks in rocks were numerically studied by using a new ly dev eloped numerical code, Rock Failure Process Analy sis ( RFPA2D).By demo nst rating the deformation and st ress field, the heterog enei ty-related acoustic emissions and the rock bridge behavior, the simulation rev ealed mechanism of propagation, interaction and coalescence of multi-cracks in bri ttle and heterogeneous rock. It is show n that, for rock materials which are highly heterog eneous, to treat it asa homog eneous and continuous material may result in a dif ferent simulation result from that for the real rock behavior, suchas acoustic emissionor microseism and rock bridg eoren-echelonfaults.
