Abstract: The measure of fault gas is a commonly used method for detecting active faults. Practice has proved that this method is effective on the initial period of detecting active faults in shallow coverage areas. This paper is to explain the problem of how to improve the effectiveness of the method in deep. Based on the plentiful factual measured data of fault gas in Tianjin area, and by contrasting and analyzing the artificial seismic method and the drilling and the chronological dating,we elaborated on the effectiveness of fault gas method from three aspects of active buried faults location, fault activity and fault segmentation. Based on actual work experience, the authors put porward the effective technical approachs of how to improve the methods of fault gas using for detecting active faults.
