Abstract: This paper outlines the advances in the application of remote sensing technology and parallel computing to earthquake emergency. The application of parallel computing technology to the extraction of earthquake damage from remote sensing images is preliminarily investigated. The parallel computations with ratio method and correlation coefficient method are applied to detect the changes of the town of Beichuan after Wenchuan 8.0 earthquake by using pre-earthquake and post-earthquake remote sensing images acquired by FORMOSAT Ⅱ Satellite. A higher speed and reduced time of image procession have been obtained comparing with that proceeded by the professional image processing software.
