Abstract: This paper introduces the finite-frequency tomography (FFT) from traveltime seismic tomography based on ray theory. It points out that the essential difference between FFT and the traveltime seismic tomography lies in the sensitivity kernel. The methods and principles of FFT are summarized, and progresses in methods and applications of FFST are reviewed in detail. The significance of FFST on the study of global mantle plume is emphasized. Finally, some existent problems in study of regional 3D velocity structure using FFT are discussed.
