Abstract: The time series of annual maximum earthquakes in Chinese mainland was decomposed systematically based on Empirical Mode Decomposition (EMD) method, the five Intrinsic Mode Function (IMF) components and the trend component were obtained. The correlation was analyzed between the different period factors of the IMF and the environment factors such as the variation of the earth rotation, the sunspot activity, and tidal motion and so on. The physical mechanism of the IMF components and its impact on the earthquake activity in Chinese mainland was preliminarily discussed.
