Abstract: The Ms 6.4 earthquake occurred in west Baotou on May 3, 1996, is a very specific strong earthquake. With the know ledge of seismic precursor characteristics and earthquake pattern evolution before strong earthquakes for more than 20 years, the Ms 6.4 is different from other strong earthquakes in Yinshan belt. The anomalies before and after the Ms 6.4 quake were found in Linhe rather than in Baotou. We discussed the specific characteristics of seismic precursors before the Ms 6.4 earthquake from seven respects, and proposed a suggestion of prediction for this kind of strong earthquakes.
