Abstract: Two moderately strong earthquakes with MS 6. 1 and MS 5. 8 occurred in the Datong basin, North Shanxi province in October, 1989 and M arch 1991, respectively. There are great differences in seismic sequences, spatial distribution, and energy release and so on between the two earthquakes.Characteristics of space-time-magnitude in precursory field and mechanism of precursor anomaly are analyzed. The analysis shows that the two earthquakes in Da tong-Yanggao region are resulted f rom strengthening of the regional stress field in North China and increasing and transmitting of stress in alargearea.
